Qualifications
As one
of Canada's top citizen advocates and community organizers for more than 25
years (and a Nader's Raider in Washington, D.C. before that), Duff Conacher
(LL.B.) has the following wealth of expertise and experience to help your
organization's advocacy efforts succeed:
- led citizen groups and national
coalitions to win more than 180 changes to federal and provincial laws
and policies since 1994, more than any other citizen advocate in
Canada;
- as Coordinator and Board member of
Democracy Watch, participated in more than 30 Canadian government
policy-making processes since 1994, including the 2001 changes to Canada's
federal financial institution laws which made more consumer protection
changes than any previous bill, and the 2006 Federal Accountability
Act which improved federal government accountability laws more
than any previous bill in the history of Canada;
- functionally bilingual in French, and
proficient in Spanish;
- worked for Government of Ontario for
total of 1.5 years in policy and legal positions;
- as Assistant Coordinator of the Democracy
Education Network, developed two courses of more than 45 training
documents on how to be an effective citizen advocate and citizen
advocacy group in Canada, and delivered dozens of workshops to citizen
groups from 2000 to 2011;
- authored more than 40 leading reports
on ethical business and good governance issues, including the most
detailed and comprehensive evaluations ever completed of the ethics
and accountability of Canadian financial institutions, and of the
integrity of Canada’s federal government;
- testified before more than 50
parliamentary committees, and in more than 50 government meetings;
- initiated and coordinated more than 15
lawsuits against federal government agencies that set leading
precedents;
- organizer, advisor and/or coordinator of
more than 10 organizations (including 2 national organizations and 4
national coalitions), and;
- with an LL.B. and the above experience,
can research and advise on all aspects of any advocacy plan.
